Our Three Winners.

Almost every little girl dreams of growing up, finding her prince charming and getting married. Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha, was one of those beautiful girls, whose dream became a reality. She found her prince charming in Deah Shaddy Barakat. They got married last December, she was 21 and he was 23. The honeymoon was hardly over when on Tuesday, February 10th, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Deah, Yusor and her younger sister, Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha were all gunned down by a neighbor.

Although most of the media reports say it was about a long standing parking issue, there is a high possibility that these senseless and heinous murders were a hate crime. They were bright and young, and not only a loss to their family and friends, but to the Muslim Community and American Society at large. We dedicate this post to them.

They were our sons and daughters, brother and sisters, friends, colleagues and yes, neighbors too. They were active in their communities, feeding the homeless and the hungry. Yusor and her husband worked as volunteers to help at a dentistry clinic for Syrian refugees in Turkey.

Our Prophet (PBUH)  said at the death of his son Ibrahim: “Our eyes are filled with tears, our hearts with grief, but we say nothing with our lips except that which pleases Allah…. Verily, to Allah we belong, and to Him we return.” (Bukhari)
